If they don't then the US will get bolder in the region, if they do then the US will get bolder in the region. Geopolitically speaking it's all about signalling your intentions and level of commitment to the other side in a bid to avoid unnecessary conflict.

However, China wants the status quo to result in the unification of China and Taiwan, the US wants the status quo to remain indefinitely. Both sides are willing
to go to war over this matter.
